I have a mason jar craft bucket list. And creating mercury glass-look mason jars was right at the top of that bucket list …
and am I crazy for having a mason jar craft bucket list?
There are quite a few tutorials out there on how to make faux mercury glass pieces using a spray paint product called Looking Glass. Like this one. And this one.
But that Looking Glass spray paint is pricey. And I think it works best if you spray the inside of the glass …
but that wouldn’t work. I want to use these as vases.
So I opted to use my trusty metallic spray paint …
I sprayed the jars with equal parts water and white wine vinegar …
Then I applied the silver spray paint …
And I waited a minute or so and then dabbed at the jars with a rag …
I repeated the spritz, spray, and dab steps two more times …
Now I can happily say I’ve crossed something off my mason jar craft bucket list …
one down, 10,000 to go!

These are great – definitely want to make them. When you repeated the steps – did you repeat each step: water/vinegar spray, paint and dab? And, assuming you used a soft cloth rag and not a paper towel, correct?

I love this!! I followed the instructions and got a pretty good result. My jar doesn’t seem as shiny, but it still looks great. My distressing isn’t as nice either, but I am wondering if it matters if you use white vinegar vs. white wine vinegar. Any suggestions would be welcome! I have a case of jars and thought this would make a nice homemade gift to give to close friends.

Absolutely gorgeous! I love mercury glass and these jars look like the real thing!!
I haven’t heard of white wine vinegar – would it be similar to just plain white vinegar?

I have already sprayed mine gold but I was hoping for more of an antique look, would this work if I was to do it now or would I need to start from scratch?
Thank you

I honestly don’t know! But why not give it a try? And let me know!

So did you do the spraying on the outside? That would make things sooo much easier!
Thanks!

I did!

Wow! These are fantastic! I’m going to have to give them a try. I have these Solar Mason Jar lid inserts that turn mason jars into a solar lamp. I feel like it would look super cool with the mercury glass!
Linda says
That does sound super cool! Let me know how it turns out! 🙂
Deanne says
Can you get the same effect with the Looking Glass paint on the outside? i tried last year on the inside and failed miserably.
Linda says
I’m not sure. Haven’t tried that but it sounds like a good idea!

This is the best Mercury Glass tutorial! Short, sweet and to the point. Thank you. Looking forward to posting pictures. I am going to try liquor bottles also for grins 😁.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! I’m so excited to try this! I love Mason jars and buy the metal hangers to make them into lanterns to use around my deck in the summer. I can’t wait to try this and make it into a lantern. I use solar inserts or LED flameless candles inside my lanterns and they look beautiful at night. I have used some of your other Mason jar ideas to paint the jars different colors yet still allow light to show through. Thank you for posting such fantastic ideas!!!

Will this work for larger vases do you think I bought rustoleum brightcoat metallic paint for the project.
