Marimekko Mason Jar

Mason Jar Crafts: Painted Floral Pink Marimekko Inspired Design

I fell in love with Marimekko fabric the minute I set eyes on it. So fun. So vibrant.

So expensive!

Yes, I was not in love with the price per yard. So very, very out of my league.

So what’s a Marimekko print lover to do? Make her own. With paint. And mason jars …

🙂

How To Make A Marimekko Inspired Painted Mason Jar

1. Start by painting your mason jar white. I used a chalked paint from Rustoleum (Linen White). You can use any flat/matte chalk paint or an acrylic paint from the craft store. Apply 2 coats, allowing 24 hours dry time between coats.

How To Paint and Distress Mason Jars

2.  24 hours after applying the second coat, distressed raised edges using 80 grit sandpaper.

3. Using a fine tipped paint brush, make flowers by dabbing brush onto jar to create six dots. I used Folk Art Enamel paint in Magenta.

4. Fill in center of circle.

5. For the lighter flower, I used Craftsmart brand acrylic paint in Pink Blossom (found at Michael’s)

6. Just space the flowers out around the jar, alternating darker and lighter pink poppies. Let dry 24 hours.

7. After giving 24 hours dry time, use Americana acrylic paint in Melon to create the center of the flower.

8.  After the center dries (a few hours), use black enamel paint to create center dot.

9. Finally, using an ultra-thin tipped paint brush, create stems using black enamel paint.

10. Let the jar dry for 24 hours, then finish with clear coat spray. (This is not a permanent finish so jars cannot be submerged in water or put in dish washer; however, the clear coat does offer added durability, so jars can be wiped down and immediately dried).

Clear Coat Spray Finish: Matte

And you’re done!

Love Marimekko and love your project. The Unikko print is my favourite, I have decoupaged a whole bench with it and have wallpapered my stairs in Marimekko Unikko.

So beautiful! I think I could even paint those flowers – and I am NOT an artist! Thanks for sharing and I love the bright colors!
