It’s official. The kids are back in school. A new year with new classes and new challenges …
and new teachers.
And wouldn’t it be nice to start off the new year with a new teacher on a positive note. Perhaps with a little teacher appreciation gift …
… in the form of some painted and distressed mason jars.
I was inspired to make this set by a blog post I happened upon last week here. But I embellished on her idea of a pencil-colored pencil holder for teacher. Adding in the ruler and chalkboard jars.
Here’s how I made them …
How to Make Back to School Mason Jar Pencil Holders
1. Paint
I used Folk Art’s Medium Yellow for the “pencil” jar. For the “ruler” jar, I used a 50/50 mix of Folk Art’s Honeycomb and white.
And I used chalkboard spray paint on the “chalkboard” jar …
2. Distress
I used sandpaper, folded into small pieces, to distress all three jars.
3. Add Stickers
I used scrapbook stickers to add the No. 2 to the pencil jar …
For the ruler jar, I used scrapbook stickers and a sharpie to draw the ruler lines …
And to finish off I sprayed with a satin finish enamel sealer. Like this one from Valspar.
4. Season Chalkboard Paint
I used chalk to season the chalkboard jar.
I opted not to seal the chalkboard jar. This way, you can still write on it with chalk.
I can’t guarantee straight A’s if you give your kid’s teacher a set of these jars …
but I’m pretty sure you might get a few smiles!

These are very cute…but as a teacher of high schoolers, please fill my Mason jar with liquor.

I absolutely love this idea! I have two sons a freshman and a 6th grader. These teachers have NO clue what they are getting with my 6th grader expecting another like the older brother. Although they attend a Catholic school I am sure they will not turn me (liquor) down at the end of the year. I thank you and appreciate all you do for your students.

Where did you get the scrapbook stickers ?

I picked them up at Michaels. Or it could have been Joanns. Both stores have big selections of scrapbook stickers. Linda
