Why is it that the start of school also triggers the start of fall? I mean, there are still two weeks left of summer on the calendar.
With that in mind, I’m sharing one last summer project. A mosaic. On a mason jar.
And before I begin my tutorial, I need to give a shout out to this blogger, A Pumpkin And A Princess, for the inspiration for this project.
How To Make A Mosaic Mason Jar
I skipped the glue gun for this project (too many little pieces = too many opportunities to burn my fingers) and chose a quick drying contact adhesive that I found at the craft store.
I worked on a section at a time, first laying out the pieces before gluing them down.
Once dry, I would just turn the jar and repeat. Dry fitting first. Then gluing down. Then let dry.
And while these jars look amazing by day …
I also like them on a summer night with a candle glowing inside …
Can’t you hear the crickets chirping?
Get out there and enjoy those last few weeks of summer. After all, winter is coming …

Hi
What did you use between the stones looks like it’s the glue but it teal in color. This would make a great centerpiece for brides.
Linda says
It’s just the glass (with glue on it). I’m thinking the teal color is just a reflection of the teal shells.
🙂 Linda
Terri says
I think a glitter sprinkled lightly in between the glass pieces would add to the sparkle. I’m going to give both a try.
Dorothy says
Where did you get the shells? I’m in CO and we don’t have beaches to look for glass on.
Dorothy says
I meant glass pieces, not shells.
Linda says
I found them at the craft store (Jo-Ann’s or Michael’s). They were in the section near the faux flowers in an aisle that had those glass bead vase fillers and moss and stuff. Hope that helps! 🙂 Linda
Tammy says
What kind of glue did you use? I have bought all kinds trying to find one that will hold glass “baubles” on wine bottles. Hot glue doesn’t work 🙁
Linda says
It’s all all purpose quick dry epoxy glue that I found at the craft store. The brand is Loctite.
Terri says
A clear glaze Mod Podge I think will work. I’m going to try that with a teal glitter for an extra sparkle.
Kia says
Hey, thanks so much for this post. Do you know if this project would also work by grouting the mosaic pieces as well ?
Linda says
I suppose you could try that too.
Debbie says
I don’t think I wouldn’t want to grout it because the light from the candle inside the jar shines through the spaces between the mosaic glass pieces. That is just my opinion.
Jan L. says
Look on Etsy! There are many, many kinds there. I get mine from there because I am an hour away from a city.
Michelle says
Can you tell me what the name of the glue you used?

It’s so pretty! These would be perfect on my sun porch in the summer. I do miss summer! Pinning for next years warm season!
Linda says
Me too!! And thanks for the pin!!!! 🙂 Linda
Diane says
These are absolutely perfect! I can go it solo – or enlist the help of my 6 yr. old granddaughter. They’re not only beautiful, they’re functional. Thanks so very much!
Linda says
Thank you for your kind comment! A word or warning that they can get messy with all the smelly glue! :)Linda
Sharon says
What is the glue/adhesive that you used? These are lovely.
Linda says
I used a Loctite quick dry contact adhesive. And thank you so much for your kind words! 🙂 Linda

I bought a Mosaic white (but dries clear) glue. the stones seem to be slipping a little but it feels as though after a bit they will stick. Do you know anything about Mosaic Adhesive? I am hoping this will work or I might have to get the Loctite adhesive. Thanks:)
Linda says
The Loctite adhesive slipped a bit too. That’s why I did it in sections at a time to give the glue a chance to dry. And I lied the jar on it’s side.
Renee says
I make mosaics often, when glueing on a curved surface there will always be slippage. You have to do what Linda said and do a portion at a time and then let it dry before turning the piece and moving on, it can be tedious when doing a large piece but it’s the only way to go. I use E6000 for most of my glueing. I also grout everything and that adhesive works greats over time.
Linda says
Thank you for chiming in with such great advice!!!!! 🙂
Hope you have a fabulous New Year!
Christie says
What kind of glue do I get to glue the applicants on besides a hot glue gun that takes forever and burns
Linda says
I used a quick dry adhesive from Loctite. I found it at the craft store.
Grace says
Fantastic idea. I have a few mason jars I am going to have to pull out. I was wondering about the type of glue you used and read through comments to see if you provided the type. You are so patient, answering the question multiple times 🙂 I might do red for the backyard now and at Christmas use them as a center piece. Thanks for great tutorial.
Linda says
I’m a little behind on answering my comments! The summer has distracted me. But you can see I used Loctite brand glue, right? I found it at Michael’s. But I’m pretty sure you can find it at JoAnns and Hobby Lobby too. Once warning: the smell is pretty strong so make sure you are in a well ventilated area! 🙂
Patricia says
I love the jar. Would you answer a question for me, Is there such a thing as Clear Grout for glass.
Linda says
I honestly do not know!
Caren says
You could try the clear elmers glue in between the glass.
I use that to make suncatchers
Juanine thompson says
I have done a number of these and even used liquid lead in between the mosaic.
Debb says
I have tried making this, the clerk at the store said to use E6000 glue…not sticking very well…and making a huge mess, what are you using “quick dry adhesive”… Loctite ? Does anyone know if mod podge works for something like this?
Linda says
So sorry for the late reply! I use Loctite on a lot of projects and am pretty sure I used it on this one too!
Elaine says
I’m wondering if instead of shells you could break up a CD and use that
Linda says
I suppose so. Just be careful of the sharp edges. And the pieces would need to be on the smaller side. But, again, I worry about the sharp edges …
Edith C says
Enjoyed your tutorial, I’m just starting so I like different styles and techniques. Thanks
Jess Marie says
Sorry if this is a silly question but…
Do you lay out the pieces dry and just use the epoxy around them and it seals, or do you pick up each piece to glue underneath? Does your Loctite come as a syringe? That’s all I’m finding on Amazon.
Linda says
I put the epoxy on the jar and then placed the pieces, working in small sections. And, no, my Loctite didn’t come as a syringe. I found mine at Michaels.
Pam says
Could you use this method on wood
Linda says
Sure!
Globronzee says
I think it’s beautiful. I am going to try it sometime this week I’m thinking of trying broken pieces I got from michaels the other day.
Kitty says
I am thinking of using this idea to make pendant lights with pieces of sea glass!
