Remember last year when I shared the genius 52 week mason jar money challenge?
I loved that idea. I even started my own. Which lasted a few months …
until I started raiding the jar. To pay for all those morning before school expenses that pop up when you have kids. My daughter needed cash for a field trip. My son needed cash to put on his CTA card. And then there was the Spring break orchestra trip …
But I’ll be honest, I was concerned about the last 2-3 months of the challenge. When I would need to cough up $40 and $50 a week. During a time when money is tight.
So this year I thought I’d put together my own mason jar money challenge. One that I think I can keep up with. Dividing the contributions equally throughout the course of the year …
with a $20-A-Week Money Challenge. In a mason jar, of course.
And at the end of the year, you’ll have $1,040 to help pay for holiday presents. Or maybe a family vacation?
My plan is to just grab an extra ten dollars two times a week when I use my debit card at the grocery store. Or craft store.
I even created a $20-A-Week Money Challenge Table to check off and monitor my progress. A chart that I’m sharing with you too as a free printable.
I printed my schedule out on a full page mailing label sticker and just cut it out and stuck it on the jar. Weeks 1-26 on the front …
and weeks 27-52 on the back.
You can find the free printable by clicking here: $20-A-Week Money Challenge Table
I hope you’ll join me in my mason jar money saving challenge!

What a cute idea! A great way to save
Thanks! 🙂
Your story is so funny – and familiar! I too tried this challenge last year and I think I only made it to week 6 before I was raiding the jar for school or gas money for my teenagers. I like this updated challenge you have come up with and I think I will try it too. I have also seen people posting the 52 week challenge and commenting they may do the savings list backwards so that they are putting in the larger amounts at the first of the year and the smaller amounts at Christmas when they need the extra money. Either challenge is not a bad idea as long as you are saving money! Thanks for the great ideas on your website.
I saw that larger amounts earlier in the year too. But I still think it’s painful to do that in January. Just off the holidays. In the middle of winter when the cold does things to cars (like they won’t start and need to be towed) … Because that’s what I’m doing right now. Waiting for the tow …
Ugh!
So glad you are taking on the $20 a week challenge with me! Which reminds me, I need to get week 2’s “donation” in to the jar!
🙂 Linda
Love this idea!! Thanks for sharing!
Debbie
I also saw the 52 week money challenge last year and thought….what a great idea. Well, then I thought about what would happen when I had to deposit the higher amounts……and broke it down to the $20 a week challenge. If I had to grab some cash, I made sure to pay myself back and was pleasantly surprised at year end. One little change I made was that rather than numbering by week number (Week 1, Week 2, week 3, etc)…….if worked better for me to put that week’s Saturday date (January 3, January 10, January 17) and what should be saved.
Great idea!
Love the idea for all ages!!
Love the idea of saving 20 a week. Last year I bought a saving tin at a budget shop for 1 euro ( I’m from Ireland). Its brilliant because you can’t dip into the tin as it has to opened with a tin opener. My husband I sat down a few weeks before Christmas and were pleasantly surprised at the amount in it. I wanted so many times to borrow from it but couldn’t. I think I will use your print out this year to mark off weeky contributions on my tin.
That’s a great idea! I find my jar coming in handy to take care of those unexpected household expenses (like a roof repair or a new washing machine!). So glad to have some money easily available! This year I’m planning on a trip to New York with my teen daughter! 🙂
