The unofficial start of summer.
At least, that’s how I’ve always viewed Memorial Day. Perhaps it’s because I grew up on the east coast. And Memorial Day was the official start of summer beach rentals.
And we all know beach = summer. Right?
To say the long Memorial Day weekly was highly anticipated would be an understatement. (In my younger years) it was a weekend filled with fun and sun and sand. Bikinis and barbecues dominated.
Now, back in my younger-bikini-wearing days I didn’t devote much time to the whole barbecue decorating thing. A keg and some dogs on the grills sufficed …
But as I’ve aged, I’ve become more discerning. And Memorial Day has taken on new and expanded meaning. It’s not just sun and summer. But respect and reverence for those who have fought for our freedom.
You could say I’ve embraced the red white and blue.
So I’ve put the bikini away and have focused on adding patriotic touches to the weekend barbecue festivities …
