Hello September!

Hello back to school!

Hello start of football season!

Hello fall crafts!

Hello Halloween! (Okay, perhaps premature … but let’s face it, Halloween is just a hop, skip and jump away from now).

And hello September mason jar calendar page!

I realize each year I kick off September with a back-to-school image. But I could just as easily do something football related. Or fall foliage related …

And yet I keep coming back to back-to-school. And (I suppose) as long as I have at least one child going back to school, that will be my focus come September.

Though, technically, my daughter started her first year of college in August. Not September.

Details. Details.

Here in Chicago, the day after Labor Day is the first day of school. And (to be honest) I’m excited to see all the neighborhood kids walk past my house to school. With their shiny new gym shoes and carefully selected first day of school outfits. They’ll have a too-big-for-them backpack strapped to their backs filled with new school year supplies. And mom or dad (or both) will be walking with them. Some with a family pet. Some with grandma or grandpa (or both) accompanying them too.

And as I watch the kids and their parents and their pets and their grandparents walk past my house to school, I’ll feel a little ping of melancholy …

because my kids are not walking among them. One is done with college and looking for a full time job. One just started college out of state.

Perhaps someday I’ll be among the grandmas accompanying their grandchildren to school. 🙂
