The biggest challenge I face each year when putting together the calendar page is the theme …
Sometimes it could be a look or feel (like watercolors or doodle art) or it can be the whole style of the page (like the year each month featured hanging jars).
And after last year’s doodle art pages, I wasn’t sure I could top that.
I really, really likes the simplicity of the doodle art. Not to mention the savings on colored ink!
And every year I swear up and down and backwards and forwards that I will keep it simple.
Simple, simple, simple.
And then I go and over-complicate things!
I went into 2020 with my simple mantra. I thought that maybe I could fill a single jar – using the same jar each month – with a flower that represented each month. I even found a month-by-month flower chart to use …
and then the clip art offerings on Etsy foiled my plan! I could not find a flower illustration to represent each month.
But what I did stumble across were succulents.
Succulents!
Beautiful watercolor succulents! Cute little potted plants and cacti!
So then I thought I’d just put a different potted succulent in the same illustrated jar each month and call it a wrap …
remember how I over-complicate things?
but I couldn’t let it go there. I couldn’t leave it alone. I needed to add my own twist. I needed to dress up those little succulents with some month-specific themed accessories.
Can you tell I was a big fan of paper dolls when I was little?
So my January succulent cactus is ringing in the New Year with a party hat and balloon.
And doesn’t he look like he’s waving at us? 🙂
Oh, I’m going to have so much fun dressing up my clip art succulents in 2020!
